Cisco systems has unveiled a new Internet technology it says will pave way for the next generation of high speed Internet connectivity. The “CRS-3″ network routing architecture will allow down-link speeds of up to 322 terabits per second according to the company in an announcement on Tuesday.
Cisco chief Executive John Chambers noted that many sceptics will claim that such fast speeds are not necessary but argued that the need of high definition media on IPTV and mobile phones will ultimately demand it. “I know that this is not that exciting to the average consumer right now, but it is the foundation for future speeds” Chambers said during the announcement on Tuesday.
The announcement has been welcomed by Google which is also in the process of developing a high speed broadband
network. With 12 times the traffic capacity of the nearing competing system, the CRS-3 “designed to transform the broadband communication and entertainment industry by accelerating the delivery of compelling new experiences for consumers, new revenue opportunities for service providers, and new ways to collaborate in the workplace,” the company said.
Analyst predict the routing technology will be initially available for data centers and network carrier providers with the initiative to encompass homes as well.
