Drones or Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles (UCAV’s) will be a vital part of Modern warfare systems by the year 2047. These drones will have the capability to evaluate and observe the warfare scenarios and make intelligent decisions accordingly.
So the future wars will not require pilots and their advanced training, but they would be replaced by Drones and advanced programming.
The Modern warfare techniques are becoming more dependent on processing power of computer. The risk to the life of a person is avoided by sending in Drones in enemy areas which are being controlled by pilots sitting in a virtual cockpit in another part of the world.
In the proposed 2009 – 2047 plan of USAF, the drones will have the capability to think and make decisions on their own. The blazing fast computers on board would process information in nano seconds and make a decision accordingly. The UCAV would be able to set its combat strategy and its attack stategy.
It would be able to perform a Risk analysis in different situations. If the risk gets too high then it would abort the mission. but if risk is under the prescribed threshold, the drone will carry out the attack by evaluating and judging the scenario.
The Air force would be able to swarm a high priority target with a large number of these drones, which would then return home by destroying the target intelligently.
There has been a debate in the parliament about authorizing the drones to make lethal decisions, that can lead to loss of friendly lives. The Air force is of the view that by improved programming and better communication between these drones, the mishaps can be avoided completely.
A super intelligent Drone is also proposed which would act as a Wingman of a manned Aircraft and protect it from hostile Attacks, while supporting it to carry out the missions.
Some Stealth drone designs are also finalized and the work is started on them, Such a drone would be the most lethal weapon in the warfare as it would be invisible to radar. A stealth drone design is shown above.

I have to admit, I write computer software, and we can do more and more amazing things with them. The catch is that we still screw up programming them, and when we do that, they can do some amazingly bad things. It seems that giving a computer a gun and a set of wings and telling it to “go find something to kill” is just asking for trouble.
